…and will henceforth be known under the name Micropolis and is apparently going to be included in the OLPC project. Cool.

Read more here: SimCity Source Code Released.
Also, visit Don Hopkins, one of the main forces in this project.

Strangely enough, it only a few days since I encountered the open source / old school project FreeCol - that is based on Sid Meiers classical Colonization. This spurred me to search for more open source games and came upon this list: Free and Open Source Games on the Internet.

Are we going to see a rise in open source computer games based on abandoned gems from the 90ties?
Here’s a vote for Ghosts’n'Goblins and Elite!
Update – there is actually an open source project dedicated to deep space trading, privateering and bounty hunting: Vega Strike. I haven’t tried it (yet), but I’m downloading as I write this. Update follows

What old games do you miss?

Being a huge fan of the 3 Fallout-PC games (fallout, Fallout 2 and Fallout Tactics) I was filled with an instant urge to buy and try Lionheart – a computer Role Playing Game that uses the rules from Fallout 1,2 and Fallout Tactics PC games.

And while we’re at it – there has been rumours about a release of Fallout 3 for a couple af years now, but now Bethesda seems to be carrying the torch…

Update:
I’ve halfheartedly been playing Lionheart the last couple of weeks – it has some interresting twists and turns (casting spells, figthing dragons and such), but I have to follow som of the criticism being laid upon Lionheart:

the resolution is too low – 800×600 minus one third for navigation and stuff makes battle and sneaking a bit frustrating.

there is too much hacking and slashing – some dungeons just keep on and on, and there are too many mindless monsters to deal with.

I really like playing HL2, but the installation and upgrading prcesses are hopeless. A couple of minutes ago I started HL2 up – the game starts to download upgrades and whatnot. Get a grip and install the upgrades AFTER I finish playing! Microsoft has gotten the idea – the upgrades to windows are installed when you shut down – give me a notice that there are upgrades waiting and let med start playing. How hard can that be?

I’ve just purchased halflife 2 – it has gotten the finest reviews in all magazines. I really look forward to playing the game. But I’ve been istalling for half an hour now: the product requires that I register online to play the game on my computer, and apparently are all files installed on my computer encrypted in some form. I am puzzled that this tedious and time consuming procedure has not been mentioned in any of the reviews I have seen.
As this is my first purchase of an original computergame in newer time this might be standard procedure, although I seriously doubt it…
Hm – decrypting the files is going on 30 minutes in it self now – there really should be a usability standard for installing computergames.

Update:
Found the review in Politiken that Nis mentioned. And Nis: Half Life 2 rocks! Despite my issues with the mandatory internet connection, long loading times and user unfriendly installation process – I must admit that HL2 is the most detailed game I’ve ever played – once you get started, you’re hooked. Of course you need to start up in small doses; I got motion sickness the first couple of hours. It seems that it is quite a common phenomenon…
