…they sure do. I just got an email reminding me that is has been 516 days since I last returned a work unit. SETI@Home wants me back and therefore they send me an email gently prompting me to return to SETI@Home.
I just might. But before I do that, I have some considerations to share too:

I signed up for SETI@Home because I really liked the idea of participating in the search for LGM (little green men).

I stopped using the SETI@Home screensaver due to lack of eyecandy. The Matrix Screensaver is so much cooler…

I also stopped using SETI@Home due to lack of blog-candy: blog widgets, support buttons, etc

Now I get this email:

Dear PÃ¥l:

We’d like to invite you to reconnect with SETI@home. Our records show that you’ve been with SETI@home since 22 November 2002, but it’s been 516 days since you last returned a work unit. We want you back, and here’s why:

These are exciting times for SETI@home. Last year we implemented a new SETI@home data recorder at the Arecibo radio telescope in Puerto Rico. This recorder is attached to a state-of-the-art multibeam receiver, so we can now measure signals from 7 positions on the sky at once, with greater sensitivity to weak signals compared to the data from the flat feed antenna we’ve used since 1999. We’ve greatly increased the sensitivity of our data analysis, and the likelihood that we’ll find the first signs of extraterrestrial life. We’re also close to releasing a second application, Astropulse, which will look for extremely short pulses of astronomical (and possibly intelligent) origin.

With these new developments comes an increase in required computing power, for which we depend on people like you. We hope you will consider signing back on with SETI@home, and help in this wonderful scientific venture.

If you experienced problems running SETI@home, please try any of the resources listed at: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/sah_help.php including the new BOINC Online Help System which lets you talk live, over the Internet, with a help volunteer: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/help.php

We thank you for your involvement in SETI@home, and hope that you rejoin us in our search for signals from other worlds.

– The SETI@home team

To not get any more email from SETI@home, please click here.

SETI@home – http://setiathome.berkeley.edu
Space Sciences Laboratory / 7 Gauss Way
University of California, Berkeley, CA 92740-7450

…and I wonder:

Where did you want me to go? Really. Please submit a URL!

What is my username? After all, It is 516 days since our last happy hour.

Where did you want me to go again?

It’s been 516 days and there is still no eyecandy, no blog support, no nothing – no wait – there’s a Facebook application - *nice*…

Upgrading was flawless and I then decided to restructure my permalinks – hopefully the Redirection-plugin along with pinging Google Sitemaps will save my poor 404 page from the worst heat.

But then again: that’s a rule of the game – and if your aim is to promote semantically rich urls in your Twitter-feed, you just better keep them below 30 characters. It’s hard enough to limit the praising of a given link to 140 characters.

So, what are the more concrete implications of this?
Well, looking at my own permalinks (that have annoyed me for some time now) – I now have another reason for skipping those non-semantical parts of the permalink: http://blog.heick.nu/archives/2008/04/. That’s 38 characters right there – and I can be pretty damn sure that any link from this blog posted on Twitter is going to be tinyurlified…
Still even if I (when) change my permalinks to the shortest possible form: http://blog.heick.nu/%postname% – I only have 10 chars to do with.
In any case – In the future, I might just start shortening my urls to make them Twitter-friendly…

Is that called Social Media Optimization? SMO?

A couple of months ago I sat down with a group of former colleagues from the SEO company formerly known as Notabene.net. While bemoaning the fact that a lot of the interesting news we shared with each other at our desks didn’t go further than sporadic messenger conversations and emails, the idea of a blog collaboration project arose.
As we were all thoroughly brain washed to believe that the world revolves around SEO, SEM, and ROI, it was an easy task to pick the focus of our blog. But as we have now branched out in different directions, our information intake will probably be mirrored by our respective jobs and activities.
So without further ado, I invite you to come see us at the Digital Frontier – read, comment, share.
Be warned though, that we write in danish and only about really interesting stuff…

Found an interesting blog-post on Techchrunch today. It seems that the market for free yet complex traffic analysis tools has a few new serious competitors. This probably means that we’ll see even more features from the free analysis tools in the future.
This prompted me to do a quick writeup on the different free traffic analysis tools out there:

Woopra is the latest player on the scene and in the words of Techcrunch is ‘Google Analytics or Nuconomy, but in real time…’ – sounds good to me…
(update: Woopra is currently invitation-only)

Google Analytics is probably one of the biggest players in the market. Analytics has a really nice flashy (flex?) interface, but has a 1 day delay on traffic data.

Nuconomy

is designed to consider the impact of widgets, Ajax, Flash, mobile, etc., which don’t generally show up in page view metrics. And they are also measuring everything on both a contributor level (think analytics by author in a blog) and user level (people on the site).

(Techcrunch) … also read a positive review on ReadWriteWeb

Clicky has a nice web2.0′ish interface, and data in real time. There is a basic free account with a limit of 3 sites to track and a pro account with bells and whistles.

Statcounter has a more traditionally looking interface, but data here is also real time.

GoStats has an nice and clean interface that looks like a blend of Clicky and statcounter.

Bonus info:
If you use Greasemonkey, Joost de Valk has a really nice greaseMonkey statistics detector that gives you an idea of how and when you are being tracked.

I’m on a mix of Analytics, Statcounter and Woopra.
What do you use?
