SETI@Home needs my help
April 29th, 2008…they sure do. I just got an email reminding me that is has been 516 days since I last returned a work unit. SETI@Home wants me back and therefore they send me an email gently prompting me to return to SETI@Home.
I just might. But before I do that, I have some considerations to share too:
- I signed up for SETI@Home because I really liked the idea of participating in the search for LGM (little green men).
- I stopped using the SETI@Home screensaver due to lack of eyecandy. The Matrix Screensaver is so much cooler…
- I also stopped using SETI@Home due to lack of blog-candy: blog widgets, support buttons, etc
Now I get this email:
Dear PÃ¥l:
We’d like to invite you to reconnect with SETI@home. Our records show that you’ve been with SETI@home since 22 November 2002, but it’s been 516 days since you last returned a work unit. We want you back, and here’s why:
These are exciting times for SETI@home. Last year we implemented a new SETI@home data recorder at the Arecibo radio telescope in Puerto Rico. This recorder is attached to a state-of-the-art multibeam receiver, so we can now measure signals from 7 positions on the sky at once, with greater sensitivity to weak signals compared to the data from the flat feed antenna we’ve used since 1999. We’ve greatly increased the sensitivity of our data analysis, and the likelihood that we’ll find the first signs of extraterrestrial life. We’re also close to releasing a second application, Astropulse, which will look for extremely short pulses of astronomical (and possibly intelligent) origin.
With these new developments comes an increase in required computing power, for which we depend on people like you. We hope you will consider signing back on with SETI@home, and help in this wonderful scientific venture.
If you experienced problems running SETI@home, please try any of the resources listed at: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/sah_help.php including the new BOINC Online Help System which lets you talk live, over the Internet, with a help volunteer: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/help.php
We thank you for your involvement in SETI@home, and hope that you rejoin us in our search for signals from other worlds.

…and I wonder:
- Where did you want me to go? Really. Please submit a URL!
- What is my username? After all, It is 516 days since our last happy hour.
- Where did you want me to go again?
- It’s been 516 days and there is still no eyecandy, no blog support, no nothing – no wait – there’s a Facebook application - *nice*…
Upgraded to 2.5
April 22nd, 2008I just upgraded to 2.5 – I seem to belong to the 50% of WordPress users that actually like the new admin interface.
Upgrading was flawless and I then decided to restructure my permalinks – hopefully the Redirection-plugin along with pinging Google Sitemaps will save my poor 404 page from the worst heat. Otherwise – please bear with me until Google figures out what happened.
Testing blogging from Flock
April 17th, 2008I’ve spent 10 minutes with Flock – and I think I’m in love…
If Flock continues to surprise me – I may have found a perfect substitute for my unstable installation of Firefox.
Now if I could just figure out where the categories are… Ahh – they pop up after I press publish. Cool!

Firefox me up

I then tried upgrading to the recent beta of Firefox 3, but none of my extensions worked there, so back to my buggy Firefox again.
What about your Firefox – unstable. What did you do?
Ok, so Bush is their president, right?
March 31st, 20086 free traffic analysis tools
March 31st, 2008Found an interesting blog-post on Techchrunch today. It seems that the market for free yet complex traffic analysis tools has a few new serious competitors. This probably means that we’ll see even more features from the free analysis tools in the future.
This prompted me to do a quick writeup on the different free traffic analysis tools out there:
Woopra is the latest player on the scene and in the words of Techcrunch is ‘Google Analytics or Nuconomy, but in real time…’ – sounds good to me…
(update: Woopra is currently invitation-only)
Google Analytics is probably one of the biggest players in the market. Analytics has a really nice flashy (flex?) interface, but has a 1 day delay on traffic data.
is designed to consider the impact of widgets, Ajax, Flash, mobile, etc., which don’t generally show up in page view metrics. And they are also measuring everything on both a contributor level (think analytics by author in a blog) and user level (people on the site).
(Techcrunch) … also read a positive review on ReadWriteWeb
Clicky has a nice web2.0′ish interface, and data in real time. There is a basic free account with a limit of 3 sites to track and a pro account with bells and whistles.
Statcounter has a more traditionally looking interface, but data here is also real time.
GoStats has an nice and clean interface that looks like a blend of Clicky and statcounter.
Bonus info:
If you use Greasemonkey, Joost de Valk has a really nice greaseMonkey statistics detector that gives you an idea of how and when you are being tracked.
I’m on a mix of Analytics, Statcounter and Woopra.
What do you use?
Disney movie features subliminal messaging
March 27th, 2008The idea is not new and the concept may or may not have been deployed as marketing strategies in order to get people to buy more pop corn or whatnot…
Theres a lengthy article on Subliminal messaging on wikipedia. Anyhows – the reason for all this is the below snippet from one of Disneys “The Rescuers”, where a naked woman is seen in the background in one of the scenes:
